SMC
SMC runs
hundreds of infomercials and advertisements on TV, newspapers,
and in business magazines. SMC mainly deals with jewelry,
giftware, and similar general items. SMC recruits vendors by
telling them they can manage their own home business by selling
SMC's products for more than they were bought for. Basically,
SMC is a drop shipping company, and I think you should be very
wary when dealing with this type of business.
Drop shipping is a supply
chain management technique that retailers use to save their own
space and cost by dropping all of the merchandise at a
wholesale outlet. The wholesaler ships the goods directly to
the customer after the purchase is made. You are responsible
for selling the product to consumers and SMC will ship it out
directly to your customers. SMC advertises this like a home
business. They give you information on how to recruit customers
and convince you that you simply have to launch a website,
which they will sell you with their already-made template, and
the merchandise will sell itself.
Drop shipping is a dangerous
business to blindly believe in. The only person who is
guaranteed money is the retailer because you are required to
pay upfront before any items are shipped. Sometimes SMC makes
exceptions and lets you pay as you go, but either way they will
receive your investment money. Be prepared for a long spiral of
disappointment if you choose to invest with
SMC.
The website is no easy money
making venture either. You have to pay to launch it and do your
own advertising online. Advertising is never cheap, and the
cost comes out of your own pocket. Unless you know the
techniques involved in getting targeted traffic to your website
and convert sales, you can loose a lot of money fast. Ebay and
other big retail stores are already saturated with the kind of
products SMC expects you to sell, so the competition makes it
hard to find buyers, as well as decreases the selling price.
SMC gives an estimated product resell pricing list that
contains no realistic numbers. They insist you can sell your
products for far more than what is feasible in Today's
market.
Be prepared to find SMC's
assistants calling your phone sometimes as much as once a week.
They charge for advice and try to make you sign up to speak to
them monthly, by telling you that they will assist your
endeavors. It takes far too much work, investment, and
persuasion to get consumers to buy what they don't need so no
SMC assistant can magically gain you sales.
You should really think twice
before getting involved in an investment that corners you. With
SMC you can cancel your membership but that involves several
extra steps which probably keeps some people from returning
their material. However you look at it, chances are
Specialty Merchandise Corporation will cost you more than you
will make.
SMC seems like a reputable company and
there are people who succeed with this program however,
unless you are the most popular vendor at the flea market or
have internet marketing skills, you don't stand a chance at
getting rich quick.
